Application of Nitrogen Generators in the Oil and Natural Gas Industry

Nitrogen generators are core supporting equipment throughout the entire processes of safety assurance, production increase, storage, transportation and processing in the oil and natural gas industry. Leveraging the inert, dry and on-site producible properties of nitrogen, they perform key functions such as explosion prevention, oil displacement, inerting and protection.

     I. Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (Core Production Increase + Safety)
  1. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
Nitrogen Injection Flooding: Inject high-pressure nitrogen into depleted/low-permeability reservoirs. Leveraging nitrogen's expandability, low viscosity and high diffusivity, it establishes displacement channels to drive residual oil and gas towards production wells, boosting the recovery factor by 10%-20%.
Foam Nitrogen Flooding: Add foaming agents to form stable foams, block high-permeability channels, force nitrogen into low-permeability zones, and further improve reservoir producing degree.
Gas Lift Oil Production: Inject high-pressure nitrogen into the bottom of wells to reduce the density of the liquid column in the wellbore, realize artificial lifting, accelerate liquid drainage and increase output.
  1. Reservoir Stimulation and Production Enhancement
Nitrogen Foam Fracturing: It mixes with fracturing fluid to form foam, reducing fluid consumption, minimizing formation damage and improving fracture conductivity.
Liquid Nitrogen Slug Blasting: It creates an artificial fracture network and connects natural micro-fractures, which is applicable to shale gas and tight oil and gas reservoirs.
  2. Drilling and Downhole Safety
Well Control and Fire Fighting: In case of sudden blowout and fire, nitrogen is injected rapidly for inerting to reduce oxygen concentration and extinguish fires by suffocation.
Wellbore Wax Removal / Blockage Removing: High-pressure nitrogen flushes the wellbore to clear wax blockages and impurities and restore fluid circulation.
Drilling Fluid Protection: Nitrogen purifies drilling fluid to reduce environmental pollution.

II. Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation (Safety Protection)
    1. Tank Inerting (Nitrogen Blanketing)
Nitrogen is injected into the top of floating roof tanks and fixed roof tanks to form an inert gas layer, isolate oxygen, and prevent oil and gas volatilization explosion, oxidative deterioration and equipment corrosion.
Nitrogen is used to maintain positive pressure and achieve inerting in LNG storage tanks and cryogenic vessels to avoid low-temperature safety hazards.
    2. Pipeline and Equipment Maintenance
Nitrogen Purging/Replacement: During the construction maintenance of new pipelines and vessels, nitrogen is adopted to replace air, flammable gases and moisture so as to prevent explosion and corrosion.
Tightness/Strength Test: Nitrogen is applied for pressure testing, featuring safety, reliability and no residue.

III. Natural Gas Purification and Oil Refining Processing (Protection + Process)
      1. Process Protective Gas
High-purity nitrogen (99.9% - 99.999%) is used in units such as catalytic reforming and hydrocracking to protect catalysts, prevent oxidative deactivation and extend service life.
Nitrogen filling and inertization are applied to distillation towers and reactors to avoid explosion caused by the mixing of combustible materials with air.
      2. Natural Gas Treatment
It serves as carrier gas/purging gas to assist in removing H₂S, CO₂ and moisture, so as to improve natural gas purity.
It is used for drying and corrosion protection of pipelines and equipment to prolong their service life.
IV. Offshore Platforms and FPSOs (Special Scenarios)
Offshore platforms and FPSOs feature limited space and harsh operating environments. Skid-mounted or containerized nitrogen generators support rapid deployment, explosion-proof performance, salt spray resistance, and adaptability to extreme temperatures.
They supply continuous nitrogen for platform storage tanks, process systems and emergency fire suppression to ensure the safety of offshore operations.
